Prof. Francis Anyim, a university teacher from the Faculty of Management Science at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has called on the federal government to prioritize education funding by adhering to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO) recommendation of allocating 26% of the annual budget to education.

Anyim noted that increasing the budgetary allocation to education could resolve the recurring disputes between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the federal government. He pointed out that the current allocation of N1.54 trillion out of a proposed N27.5 trillion budget for the 2024 fiscal year, which amounts to just 6.39%, is insufficient and a major cause of the ongoing conflicts.

Additionally, Anyim expressed concerns about the limited capacity of institutions to accommodate students seeking admission. He made these remarks during his address at the ninth valedictory service and graduation ceremony of Christ College in Ikeja, Lagos. He also encouraged students to work diligently to overcome the challenges posed by the country’s social and economic conditions.

Samuel Olatunji, Chairman of the school, highlighted the significant challenges in caring for, nurturing, equipping, and preparing students for the future. He attributed the school’s annual successes to the support of teachers, staff, and divine guidance.

Parents of the graduating students shared their positive experiences with the school, praising its commitment to moral and academic excellence. Mrs. Chinyere Osuagwu commended Christ College for effectively harnessing children’s potential and praised the teachers for their ability to connect with students. Another parent, Mrs. Anita Atilola, lauded the school for maintaining high standards over the years.
