Gov. Otti inaugurates FEDT Board to restore peace in Government College Umuahia
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has taken decisive steps to resolve the ongoing crisis at Government College Umuahia by inaugurating the Government College Umuahia Fisher Educational Development Trust (FEDT) Board. The new board is led by Chinedu Ahaiwe, who also serves as the National President of the Government College Umuahia Old Boys Association.
Earlier this year, allegations surfaced through a petition by Mr. Chukwudi Onwudinanti, claiming that school fees were being exorbitantly charged at one million naira per student, adversely affecting poor students among other concerns. These claims were thoroughly investigated by the Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Public Petitions.
During the inauguration ceremony held in Umuahia, Governor Otti—represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu—emphasized that his administration’s education reforms aim to create an enabling environment for students to thrive. He underlined the importance of restoring the prestige of Government College Umuahia and other schools across Abia State.
“The goal is to build a society that everyone will be proud of,” Otti declared, urging the FEDT Board to champion this vision.
In his remarks, Chinedu Ahaiwe expressed gratitude to the state government for supporting the school’s revival efforts. He highlighted Government College Umuahia’s rich history and legacy and explained why the trust proposed state government management of the school to ensure its sustainable development.
Ahaiwe described the FEDT as a special-purpose vehicle created to lead the restoration project, praising the pioneering board members for nearly 11 years of contributions. He also assured that the trust will balance the interests of parents and outstanding students moving forward.
