Kwara State University Appoints New Vice-Chancellor
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has appointed Professor Shaykh-Lukman Jimoh as the new Vice-Chancellor of Kwara State University (KWASU). This appointment follows Professor Jimoh’s 19-month tenure as acting Vice-Chancellor.
A statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, highlighted that the university’s governing council’s screening process saw Professor Jimoh emerge as the top candidate. Jimoh initially stepped in as Acting Vice-Chancellor following the passing of Professor Mohammed Mustapha-Akanbi in November 2022 and previously served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor from 2020 to 2022.
“Shaykh-Lukman is highly recommended for the role, with extensive experience as both an administrator and a scholar,” Ajakaye stated. “He has received numerous academic honors, including Best Graduating Student of the Department of Religions (University of Ilorin) in 1988, and holds fellowships/memberships in various professional bodies.”
Additionally, Governor AbdulRazaq has approved the transition of Kwara State College of Education Ilorin into the University of Education to facilitate its establishment and logistical advantages. The government will continue efforts to enhance the viability of the state’s other colleges of education.
The decision on the university’s location follows the governor’s recent signing of the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (Establishment) and Kwara State University of Education (Establishment) Bills, officially establishing both institutions. The signing ceremony took place at Government House in Ilorin with House of Assembly Speaker Rt Hon. Yakubu Danladi Salihu and other key officials in attendance.
