Just a day after the fatal stabbing of a 200-level Chemistry student, suspected armed robbers targeted another off-campus student lodge at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, Niger State.

The robbery occurred early Tuesday at ‘Malagi Lodge’ in the State Low-Cost area. According to student reports, two armed robbers wielding a pistol and a cutlass stole five iPhones, including an iPhone 14 Pro Max, and a black Haoju motorcycle. The motorcycle was later recovered by police along Agaie Road.

A student source said, “Robbery occurred again today around 2:30 AM at ‘Malagi Lodge,’ near Mai Wankin Hula Shop. The robbers fled with five iPhones and a black Haoju bike, which police quickly recovered on Agaie Road.”

This incident follows the death of Abdulwahab Jafar, a 200-level student who was stabbed during a robbery at ‘Nda Kitabu Lodge’ opposite the university’s main gate early Monday morning. Jafar died after being taken to the General Hospital in Lapai, prompting student protests that blocked the Agaie–Lapai Road and called for urgent action on campus insecurity. During the protests, the founder of Lapai TV was reportedly assaulted near the university gate.

In response, IBBUL management declared June 24 and 25 as lecture-free days for mourning and reflection. Deputy Registrar of Information, Alhaji Baba Akote, confirmed that calm has returned to both the Main and Kobo campuses, denying reports of attacks on students by locals.

Akote urged students to continue their academic activities peacefully, avoid spreading unverified information, and cooperate with security officials. To prevent further incidents, the university has introduced regular security patrols around student lodges and key access routes.
