Nigerian rapper and activist Folarin Falana, widely known as Falz, has responded to recent allegations made by social media influencer Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan. Falz vehemently refutes the claims, labeling them as baseless and defamatory.

In an appearance on The Afro Beat Podcast, which was published on Wednesday via YouTube, Falz revealed that he was largely unfamiliar with VeryDarkMan’s activism prior to the controversy. “I don’t know much of it. I’ll be honest with you,” he admitted. He acknowledged having seen some of Verydarkman’s earlier content, particularly those addressing the dangers of unregulated bleaching products. “At that time when I saw some of those clips, I thought, okay, this person seems to be doing something right. This is a good cause,” he noted.

The controversy erupted when VeryDarkMan made serious allegations against Falz and his father, prominent lawyer Femi Falana, claiming they had colluded with certain individuals to manipulate the justice system. Specifically, Verydarkman accused Falz of having a homosexual relationship with popular crossdresser Bobrisky, thereby questioning the rapper’s credibility as an activist.

Addressing these allegations, Falz expressed his disbelief and dismay, stating, “How would anyone feel? These are horrible things to say. Absolutely no proof.” He criticized VeryDarkMan for making such unfounded claims without any evidence to support them. “All these things are false, basically. So now you have to defend yourself because he who alleges must prove. I’ve gone to court for defamation of character because that’s clearly what this is,” Falz asserted.

The rapper also took the opportunity to clarify recent misreporting surrounding the case. He explained that while the court did not order a financial settlement, it did rule for VeryDarkMan to remove the defamatory video from his platforms. “Now, recently it was reported that the court has ordered N500 million to be paid, blah, blah, I mean, that’s false. The case of defamation is still very much in court. Yes, we have instituted proceedings for defamation because, of course, that is what this is,” he said.

Falz emphasized that the legal battle is ongoing. “However, there’s something called interim applications, which you can do while a substantive case is still ongoing. You can apply to the court for an injunction because this defamation still subsists,” he explained. He pointed out that the defamatory video remains accessible on VeryDarkMan’s pages, stating, “This video I speak of is still very much on his page. He has not taken it down.”

He concluded by clarifying the court’s ruling, stating, “The ruling that the court gave was to take this down and desist from any further defamatory remarks pending the determination of this substantive suit. That is what that is.”
