Popular Nigerian musician and activist Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has called for a public hearing to address the government’s failure to adequately equip the military, despite large annual budgets allocated for ammunition and arms acquisition.

Falz made the appeal on Monday while commenting on the country’s worsening security situation. He described the current state of affairs as a “national security emergency” and urged citizens to pressure their representatives in the National Assembly.

In a video that has since gone viral, he said: “We need to call for a public hearing, broadcast on live TV, livestreamed so anyone anywhere in the world can watch. So many billions being budgeted and released for the acquisition of arms and ammunition—but what is happening? Why is the military still ill-equipped? Why are military convoys still being ambushed by criminals? Why was an army general murdered on video?”

Falz called on Nigerians to demand an emergency public hearing to address the strategy for combating terrorism, the alleged inadequacies in military equipment, and measures to ensure the safety of citizens.
