The Osun State Police Command has announced that two individuals were rescued from the collapsed building in the Sabo area of Osogbo, the state capital.

According to a statement on Monday by the command spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, security agencies found that only two people were trapped under the rubble of the one-storey building.

NIGERIA NEWS 247 reported that the building collapsed on Sunday morning, July 14, 2024, in Osogbo’s Sabo area. Governor Ademola Adeleke, through his spokesperson Olawale Rasheed, warned developers and residents against constructing houses without approved building plans.

Initially, the number of trapped victims was uncertain, with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) state spokesperson, Adeleke Kehinde, estimating five people. Kehinde stated, “The building collapsed around 07:30 hrs on Sunday, July 14, 2024, trapping five people. Two have been rescued, while three remain trapped under the decking requiring a crane.”

Kehinde also mentioned that the command had warned on June 10 that the building, used as a hideout by hoodlums, posed a threat to the community. “We reported the building as an eyesore and recommended a raid by the task force and environmental body to sanitize it,” she added.

However, the police clarified that of the two rescued, one sustained visible injuries while the other was unharmed. Opalola stated, “As part of the rescue operations at the collapsed building in Sabo, Osogbo today, led by Amotekun and one Asiwaju, it was confirmed that only two individuals were trapped and rescued. One sustained no visible injuries, while the injured person is responding to treatment in the hospital.”
