FCTA Confirms No Lives Lost in Trademore Estate Flood
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has reassured the public that no lives were lost due to the flood at Trademore Estate in Abuja.
The FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) confirmed this, refuting claims of casualties. A video on social media had suggested that two individuals were swept away by the floods.
However, the Acting Director-General of FEMD, Florence Wenegieme, after assessing the affected areas following Monday’s downpour at Trademore Estate, declared that no lives were lost.
Wenegieme stated, “We did not receive any distress calls from Trademore. We saw the viral video and went there to carry out an assessment. We interviewed some residents, and they confirmed that no lives were lost to the floods. We activated NEMA, FCT Fire Service, Department of Development Control, and Department of Engineering Services.”
She noted that the houses submerged by the floods were among the 116 structures marked for demolition in 2023 when Trademore was declared a disaster zone. The FCTA was prevented from removing the structures due to a court injunction filed by the Trademore Estate residents’ association.
Wenegieme lamented that a primary school with about 500 pupils, management, and staff is also situated on the water channel in the estate, describing it as a disaster waiting to happen. She appealed to residents in houses marked for demolition to relocate and advised the estate owners to provide the necessary infrastructure to prevent future flash floods that could lead to loss of lives.
