Labourers in Osun Drown While Retrieving Fetcher from Well
Two men, identities yet to be confirmed, were tragically discovered dead in a well at a construction site in Ile-Ife, Osun State. The incident occurred on Thursday, as they drowned while attempting to retrieve a bucket used for fetching water.
The incident took place around 1:09 pm at a construction site opposite Ilesa Motor Park along the Ife-Ilesa expressway in Ile-Ife.
According to sources near the scene, who wished to remain anonymous, one of the labourers accidentally dropped the fetching bucket into the well. Subsequently, one of the men entered the well to retrieve the bucket but did not resurface.
Upon realizing his partner’s predicament, the second labourer attempted a rescue but also became trapped inside the well. This led to heightened tension, prompting bystanders to contact the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Federal Fire Services for assistance.
Kehinde Adeleke, spokesperson for the NSCDC, Osun State Command, confirmed the incident. He stated that NSCDC operatives, along with Federal Fire Service personnel, successfully retrieved the bodies of the two men from the well.
Adeleke described the incident as tragic and explained that the men, both from Iwo, were engaged as workers on a building project in Ile-Ife. He recounted how the first man fell into the well while fetching water, prompting his companion to attempt a rescue, resulting in both men tragically drowning.
