During a recent session, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, announced that a bill proposing an increase in the salary package for certain political office holders will be forwarded to Governor Ademola Adeleke for approval.

The bill, titled Osun State Public Political Office Holders Reviewed Remuneration Package (Amendment No. 2) Bill 2024, was introduced by Majority Leader Kofoworola Adewunmi on April 30, 2024. This development was reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.

Adewunmi pointed out that the salaries of public political office holders in Osun State have not been increased since 2007, as stated in the policy direction of the bill.

He emphasized that the salaries outlined in the Osun State Public Political Office Holders Remuneration Package Law 2007 no longer align with present economic conditions.

Adewunmi highlighted the disparity between the economic landscape now and that of 17 years ago when the law was enacted.

Therefore, it is necessary to increase the salaries of certain public political office holders in order to improve their standard of living, aligning with Governor Ademola Adeleke’s five-point agenda.

Furthermore, a State Assembly resolution from May 8, 2008 that raised the remuneration of some public political office holders not regulated by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission has been revisited and included in this bill.

The Governor clarified that this salary adjustment does not apply to lawmakers, as their salaries are legally revised by the National Assembly.
