Oyo Lawmakers Ask Makinde to Fulfill ₦500m Promise to Ajimobi Technical University
The Oyo State House of Assembly has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to fulfill his 2024 pledge of releasing ₦500 million to the Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan, and to begin monthly subvention payments starting January 2026.
This resolution was adopted during plenary following a motion sponsored by Hon. Oluwafemi Fowokanmi, representing Ibadan South West Constituency II and Chairman of the House Committee on Tertiary Education. The motion was seconded by Hon. Babajide Adebayo of Ibadan North Constituency II.
Presenting the motion, Fowokanmi expressed concern over the severe underfunding of the university, stating that the lack of adequate financial support has negatively impacted infrastructure development, staff welfare, and academic operations.
“The institution is currently surviving on scholarships, internally generated revenue, and support from TETFUND—all of which are insufficient to meet its growing demands,” he said.
While commending Governor Makinde for the recent inauguration of the university’s Governing Council, which he described as a step towards stabilizing the institution, Fowokanmi noted that the ₦500 million earmarked in the 2024 fiscal year has yet to be disbursed.
He added that the university’s financial strain has worsened following the implementation of the new national minimum wage, forcing management to rely on bank loans to meet salary and operational obligations.
In response, Speaker Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin approved the motion and directed the House Committee on Tertiary Education to engage with the university’s management. The purpose of the engagement, he said, is to audit the institution’s financial records, assess its internally generated revenue, and identify its most pressing challenges.
“The findings from this engagement will help us shape a more effective legislative intervention and ensure the university receives the support it needs to thrive,” Ogundoyin stated.
The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to supporting higher education in the state and emphasized the importance of consistent funding in ensuring the long-term viability of technical and vocational institutions.
