Six die, five injured in Ibadan multiple autocrashes
Six people lost their lives and five others were injured in a road accident in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday morning.
The incident occurred at Oke Eleshin, Amuloko on Akanran Road, involving a trailer carrying tiles and a lorry loaded with soft drinks. The crash resulted in the deaths of six individuals and injuries to five others in two tricycles.
Among the injured was a student whose mother reportedly died in the incident. Four of the injured were taken to the nearby Amuloko City Hospital, including two primary school children treated as outpatients, while two others with severe injuries were admitted for further care. The deceased were transported to an unspecified hospital.
A staff member from the Oyo Road Transport Maintenance Agency, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the accident was caused by the trailer’s brake failure as it descended a slope.
An eyewitness recounted that the trailer lost control and crushed one tricycle, leading another lorry to collide with a second tricycle while trying to avoid the trailer.
The accident caused significant traffic congestion, with passengers forced to disembark and walk. In addition to the tricycles, two other cars were damaged in the multiple crashes.
Local sympathizers, frustrated by the situation, criticized the drivers, who fled the scene, suggesting that the tragedy could have been lessened if the trailer driver had swerved into a ditch rather than facing the oncoming tricycles.
Raji Wale, Managing Director of Amuloko City Hospital, confirmed that four patients were admitted from the accident. He noted that two of the injured children had been treated and released, while two others with more severe injuries were currently receiving care. Wale mentioned that one of the children was in a tricycle with their deceased mother.
Mary Alo, the state Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, acknowledged the accident but stated she had not yet received detailed information.
