Street Parking Policy: Lagos Government Firm on Enforcement
The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to enforcing the On-Street Parking Scheme in designated areas starting in October 2024.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the introduction of regulated on-street parking, and Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi confirmed, “There is no going back on enforcement from October 2024. This measure is necessary to ensure the free flow of traffic in the state.”
General Manager of Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA), Adebisi Adelabu, clarified that the first phase of enforcement will commence in Victoria Island, parts of Ikoyi, Surulere, Ikeja, and Lekki. Adelabu noted, “In 2022, we met with various groups, including religious organizations and event centers, to inform them of the impending changes. Lagos, with over 25 million residents and more than 3 million vehicles, needs proper parking management.”
He emphasized that the scheme is not primarily for revenue generation but to mitigate traffic issues. “Proper parking management is essential for effective government policy planning. We will start with specific areas and gradually expand to cover all of Lagos over the next four years,” Adelabu added.
Addressing a recent social media post about parking charges for churches and worshippers, Adelabu clarified: “The post incorrectly stated that LASPA would charge churches and worshippers for street parking from October 2024. This information is inaccurate. The Lagos State government is not imposing parking fees on churches or worshippers but is implementing the Lagos State Parking Policy to alleviate traffic congestion.”
Adelabu concluded, “Lagos, like many major cities, faces a high demand for parking. Therefore, we are adopting a regulated on-street parking model to manage parking resources more efficiently.”
