Tragedy Strikes as Father of Two Electrocuted on High Tension Pole in Bayelsa
A father of two, identified as Amas, tragically lost his life on Friday after being electrocuted on a high-tension pole near Ekeki Police Station on Azikoro Road in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
Amas, who was not an employee of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), was attempting to connect clients to the federal power line when the fatal incident occurred.
Due to the unreliable power supply in the state, residents prefer the federal line, which provides 12-13 hours of electricity daily.
Amas, originally from Nembe Local Government Area, was reportedly stuck on the pole for hours before PHCN officials arrived to retrieve his body.
Michael Orubo, an eyewitness, recounted, “Amas lives on our street and handles most of the electrical connections in this area. It’s heartbreaking that he died this way. He had just left us during a chess game, promising to return, but he never did.”
Another witness added, “He passed me not more than five minutes after the rain stopped. Suddenly, we heard people screaming. We rushed to the scene but couldn’t help because he was wearing a safety belt that held him tightly to the pole, and it was still raining.”
Amas’ mother, who has a shop nearby, has been inconsolable since hearing the news. The community is mourning the loss of Amas, who was known for his easygoing nature and dedication to his family.
