Women from Nembe, Bayelsa State, Stage Protest Against Aiteo Oil Company
On Friday, women from Nembe Local Government Area in Bayelsa State took to the streets in a protest aimed at Aiteo Eastern and Production Company, the operator of Oil Mining Licence 29. The protest, which centered around the company’s loading point, saw demonstrators holding placards demanding immediate action in response to an oil spillage incident that occurred on Monday, June 17, 2024.
Among their demands were a thorough cleanup of the affected area, provision of relief materials to affected communities, and fair compensation for the damages incurred. The women, who began their protest at 6:30 am, issued a two-week ultimatum to Aiteo to meet these demands. They warned that failure to do so would result in the occupation of the company’s loading point at Nembe Creek.
Further details on the protest are forthcoming.
