Abia NUJ Urges to INEC for More Accessible Voter Registration Points
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State Council, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to decentralize the units handling the ongoing continuous voters’ registration, suggesting that this move could help improve low registration numbers in some states.
The Council also urged both the National and State Orientation Agencies to intensify sensitization efforts in Abia State. The recommendations came in a communique released in Umuahia following the NUJ’s monthly Congress.
Signed by Chairman Chidi Asonye and Secretary Iyke Onuegbu, the communique appealed to the Abia State government to ramp up efforts to tackle insecurity. It also called on traditional rulers to maintain peace and security within their communities.
The NUJ expressed concern over the frequent destruction of farmlands and crops by cattle in certain Abia communities and condemned the widespread open defecation in the streets of Umuahia.
The journalists reminded the state government and security agencies of the importance of enforcing the anti-open grazing laws and urged herdsmen to stop the practice of open grazing.
The Congress commended Governor Alex Otti for his prompt action in constructing speed breakers along Ubani Road to reduce frequent accidents.
Finally, the Abia NUJ reiterated that its ban on publicity against the Chairman of Umuahia North Local Government Area, Smart Ihuoma, remains in effect and warned that any journalist violating this resolution would face sanctions.
