Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has criticized the Department of State Services (DSS) over its alleged attempt to take down a social media post made by activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.

According to reports, the DSS submitted a formal petition to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), requesting the removal of a post by Sowore. The agency reportedly described the content as a threat to national security and a violation of Nigerian laws.

In a statement released on Sunday, Adeyanju called the move “unacceptable,” describing it as a direct assault on democratic principles.

“The targeting of Omoyele Sowore’s account by the DSS is unacceptable and should be condemned. Every citizen has the right to freely express their opinions, even when those views challenge those in power,” Adeyanju stated. “Using state institutions to silence or intimidate dissenting voices undermines the freedoms essential to a functioning democracy.”

He also highlighted that Sowore has consistently faced backlash from successive governments for his outspoken views but continues to speak out with courage and conviction.

“As a former presidential candidate, Sowore deserves the space and respect to engage in political discourse, even if his views are uncomfortable for those in authority,” Adeyanju added.
