The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has outrightly rejected the five-member caretaker committee recently appointed by the NLC National President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.

In a statement signed by Edo NLC Chairman Bernard Egwakhide and Assistant Secretary Omole Osahon, the state council urged the public to disregard the committee, labeling it illegitimate. The statement accused Ajaero of attempting to impose Chief Odion Olaye on Edo workers via a forced caretaker arrangement.

The Edo NLC leadership stressed that Olaye had long been rejected by the state’s workers and criticized his past inflammatory remarks, including a threat that “Edo will burn” over political disputes.

The council highlighted that the current Egwakhide-led leadership was democratically installed after Olaye was removed by a majority of affiliate unions, and asserted that labour relations had remained peaceful since.

The statement also referenced Ajaero’s controversial past involvement in forming the United Labour Congress (ULC), suggesting a similar attempt to weaken the NLC was underway in Edo State.

Calling on the Federal Ministry of Labour to respect Edo workers’ rights, the council declared its readiness to resist any backdoor imposition of Olaye.
