General Lucky Irabor, the ex-Chief of Defense Staff, has expressed support for the shutdown of Banex plaza in Abuja, asserting that any assault on soldiers should be viewed as an assault on the State.

During an interview with Arise Television on Wednesday, Irabor mentioned the events that unfolded in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja following a clash between traders and two soldiers at a plaza.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the soldiers had come to address an issue regarding a phone, leading to a confrontation with the traders. Subsequently, shop owners and traders closed their businesses for the day to prevent any retaliatory actions.

In response to the incident at Banex Plaza, Irabor expressed deep sorrow and emphasized that it is unacceptable to target any individual in uniform.

He stressed that an assault on a uniformed person, as a representative of the state, is an attack on the nation itself. It is essential for all well-meaning Nigerians to denounce such actions.

Personally, I fully support the temporary closure of Banex Plaza until those responsible for this heinous act are held accountable.

Failure to take action would only invite chaos and disorder. Irabor highlighted that the brave individuals risking their lives for our safety are members of the armed forces, police, and other security agencies.

Irabor highlighted the crucial role played by both law enforcement officers and civilians in rescuing the soldiers, preventing a potentially dire situation that could have tarnished the nation’s reputation.

He commended the media for their coverage of the incident but stressed the importance of providing context when shaping public discourse.

The media has effectively raised awareness about respecting authority figures in our society, underscoring the necessity of framing discussions within a relevant context.

It is imperative to educate the public on national security and individual responsibilities in safeguarding our institutions for a conducive living environment.

He emphasized that the army’s silence on the matter should be expected, as it is the duty of the state to communicate on their behalf.

The actions of military personnel are carried out in service to the state, not in their personal capacity, making them representatives of the government.

Therefore, it is imperative that they refrain from speaking independently and allow the state to address any issues. Expressing a moderate stance, he noted that it would have been challenging for any entity, possibly a governmental agency rather than the military specifically, to denounce such a heinous act.

Irabor urged cooperation from Banex Plaza’s leadership in aiding ongoing investigations to apprehend those responsible for the crime.
