Flood Alert: Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara Brace for Impact, Activate Response Teams
Authorities in Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states have intensified efforts to combat potential flooding following forecasts of heavy rainfall in the North-West region.
In Sokoto, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is collaborating with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), security agencies, the Red Cross, and other partners to enhance disaster response capabilities. Stockpiles of relief materials, including food and building supplies, have been assembled. Mustapha Umar, SEMA’s Director of Relief and Rehabilitation, reported that over 1,400 households in Kware Local Government Area have already been impacted by flooding.
Zamfara’s Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Musa Kainuwa, revealed ongoing efforts to clear waterways to reduce flood risks. He cautioned residents against dumping waste in drainage systems and advised riverine communities to relocate to safer areas. The Zamfara Emergency Management Agency (ZEMA) is conducting awareness campaigns in vulnerable communities, recalling last year’s floods that destroyed more than 4,000 homes in Gummi and Talata Mafara LGAs.
In Kebbi, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs Muhammad Hamidu-Jarkuka confirmed that proactive steps such as community education and logistical support are underway, with budget allocations in place to assist flood victims.
Additionally, NEMA’s Sokoto field office conducted a flood response simulation exercise across the three states to improve coordination and readiness.
Earlier, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) identified Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Niger, and Kwara among the states at high risk of major flooding in 2025.
