Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has announced a crackdown on nepotism in political appointments, revealing that many aides previously listed their family members for positions—a practice his administration will no longer tolerate.

Speaking in Calabar during a session with ex-agitators and farmers following their training in innovative farming, Governor Otu said his government plans to make more appointments starting next month. However, selections will be based on nominations received from all 196 wards across the state.

“We are preparing to make more political appointments, but I have serious concerns about past practices where nomination committees often favored their family members,” the governor stated.

He emphasized that such favoritism will not be accepted going forward, highlighting that his administration is people-centered and appointments must fairly represent all parts of the state.

To ensure transparency and inclusiveness, Governor Otu revealed plans to personally visit local government areas and wards to collect lists of eligible candidates.

“Henceforth, I will conduct town hall meetings across the LGAs and wards, where each ward will submit their nomination lists for appointments. Those seeking appointments should return to their wards and LGAs to be properly considered. No one will be allowed to nominate only their family members,” he affirmed.
