Gov Diri Reaffirms Commitment to Security After Release of Kidnapped Bayelsa Judge
Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to the security of lives and property in the state, following the safe release of Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro of the Bayelsa State High Court.
Justice Omukoro was freed on Thursday after spending 12 days in captivity. He was abducted on the evening of Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Kilimanjaro Eatery, opposite Ekeki Park in Yenagoa, shortly after returning from a trip to Warri, Delta State.
In a statement posted on his official X handle on Friday, Governor Diri expressed relief over the judge’s release and commended the security agencies, especially operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), for their professionalism during the rescue operation.
“Following my directive, the combined effort of the security agencies, particularly men of the DSS, mounted pressure on the kidnappers who fled their hideout. I thank them all for being professional in this rescue operation,” he said.
The governor further disclosed that he had ordered the arrest and prosecution of everyone involved in the abduction, assuring the public that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
“While I rejoice with the family of Hon. Justice Omukoro, members of the Judiciary, and the Bar on his safe return, I particularly appreciate God for his protection,” Diri added.
He emphasized that his administration, under the banner of “Assured Prosperity,” will continue to implement measures to ensure that Bayelsa remains hostile territory for criminals.
