The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Kayode Egbetokun, has issued an immediate suspension of the planned enforcement of the e-Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) starting on July 29. This decision was communicated by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement released on Monday in Abuja.

Adejobi clarified that the suspension aims to allow extensive public enlightenment and education on the e-CMR process, its benefits, and its operational effectiveness. The I-G has instructed police officers to refrain from demanding e-CMR certificates, warning that any officer found extorting or exploiting the public under false pretenses will face disciplinary action.

The enforcement of the e-CMR will eventually proceed, handled exclusively by dedicated officers, with the specific date to be announced later. The e-CMR initiative is designed to tackle vehicle-related crimes and safeguard both individual and corporate vehicle ownership.

Adejobi emphasized that the e-CMR registration will streamline vehicle data into a central system, enabling swift action in cases of reported thefts. It will provide real-time access to comprehensive vehicle information on police tablets, preventing duplicate vehicle registrations and serving as a repository for biometric and other relevant data.

Contrary to circulating rumors, the Nigeria Police underscored that the e-CMR is not a revenue-generating platform but rather a pivotal initiative aimed at digitalizing law enforcement for enhanced security and public safety nationwide.

The police spokesperson urged all Nigerians and residents to support and engage with the e-CMR system, highlighting its potential to enhance national security through a consolidated database and incident reporting portal shared across various government agencies.
