INEC confirms 129 party applications, launches digital portal

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it has now received a total of 129 applications from various associations seeking registration as political parties.

This update was shared following the Commission’s regular weekly meeting held on Thursday.

According to a statement issued by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, seven new applications were submitted within the past week, increasing the total to 129.

“At its regular weekly meeting held today, Thursday 10th July 2025, the Commission received further updates on additional requests from associations seeking registration as political parties. Since last week, seven more applications have been received, bringing the total number so far to 129. All the requests are being processed,” the statement read.

In addition, the Commission unveiled a new digital platform aimed at simplifying the political party registration process.

The platform is part of the Party Financial Reporting and Auditing System and is designed to make registration more efficient and transparent.

Olumekun added that final testing of the new portal is expected to be concluded within the next week.
