Isese Day: Lagos State Govt Declares Wednesday a Public Holiday
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a work-free day for public servants to mark the annual Isese Day celebration.
The announcement, made on Monday, August 18, underscores the government’s dedication to preserving indigenous traditions and promoting cultural unity within the state.
Isese Day honors Yoruba traditional religion and heritage and has grown into a significant cultural observance across Nigeria’s Southwest region. In Lagos, the day has become an annual event, allowing citizens to participate in rituals, festivals, and communal activities that pay homage to ancestral legacies and Yoruba deities.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, in a statement from the state government, described Isese Day as an important reminder of cultural preservation amid modernization.
“Isese Day is a time to reflect on our rich heritage and values as Lagosians. This work-free day allows our people to reconnect with their roots, celebrate our traditions, and strengthen unity in our diverse state,” he said.
The decision has been warmly received by traditional leaders and cultural advocates, including the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, who praised the move as a significant support for Yoruba spirituality and identity.
Planned activities for the celebration include visits to sacred sites, cultural performances, festivals, and communal prayers. The government also urged citizens to observe the day peacefully, fostering mutual respect across religious and cultural communities.
By joining states like Oyo and Osun in officially recognizing Isese Day, Lagos further affirms its position as a hub of Yoruba culture and heritage.
