The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) on Wednesday formally presented Certificates of Return to the newly elected Chairmen, Vice-Chairmen, and Councillors who emerged victorious in the 2025 Local Government and Local Council Development Area (LG/LCDA) elections.

The presentation ceremony, held at LASIEC’s headquarters in Sabo, Yaba, marked the official confirmation of the electoral mandate granted to the grassroots leaders by Lagos voters.

Presiding over the event, LASIEC Chairman Justice Ayotunde Phillips Okikiolu-Ighile described the occasion as a pivotal moment in the democratic evolution of Lagos State. She expressed gratitude to both God and the citizens for their participation and support during the election period.

“This event is more than the handing over of certificates; it reflects the spirit of democracy and the culmination of months of planning, civic engagement, and institutional cooperation,” she said.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile also acknowledged the critical roles played by a broad spectrum of stakeholders in the success of the elections. She singled out political parties, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), candidates, security agencies, civil society organizations, traditional rulers, youth and market associations, faith-based bodies, persons with disabilities, the media, and accredited observers for their collective contributions.

Commending LASIEC personnel and ad-hoc staff, she praised their professionalism and resilience in overcoming initial logistical challenges during the election process.

Responding to questions from journalists, the LASIEC Chairman highlighted the peaceful nature of the polls, adding that both local and international observers had rated the 2025 LG/LCDA elections as among the most orderly in the state’s history.

She also revealed that voter turnout had reached 24%, a notable improvement from the 10% recorded in the 2021 elections. The increase, she said, was driven by a vigorous public awareness campaign, including transport branding and billboard messaging across the state.

“This level of turnout is unprecedented in recent history and shows that more Lagosians are taking ownership of the electoral process,” she added.
