The Defence Headquarters has uncovered plans by criminal elements to launch attacks on critical infrastructure across the country and has taken proactive measures to prevent such incidents. Maj Gen Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday. He emphasized that security agencies responsible for safeguarding critical infrastructure have been alerted and that several of these planned attacks have already been thwarted.

“We are aware of plans to target critical infrastructure in the country, and we have implemented measures to prevent these attacks,” Buba stated. “Security agencies have been placed on high alert, resulting in the frustration of several of these nefarious plans.”

Buba urged citizens to prioritize security and remain vigilant to ensure a safe and secure environment. “It is crucial that we do not compromise on security,” he emphasized, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and insurgency in the nation.

In a recent operational update, Buba reported significant successes by troops, including the neutralization of 187 terrorists, the arrest of 183 suspects, and the recovery of crude oil products worth N1 billion. Additionally, troops recovered a substantial cache of weapons and ammunition and dismantled numerous illegal refining sites and criminal infrastructure in the Niger Delta region.

Regarding recent attacks on electricity infrastructure, Buba noted instances where terrorists and vandals targeted electricity towers, causing disruptions and blackouts in affected areas. He highlighted specific incidents, such as the destruction of towers in Borno State by terrorists using improvised explosive devices, underscoring the ongoing challenges in protecting vital national assets.

The Defence Headquarters remains committed to safeguarding Nigeria’s critical infrastructure and ensuring the safety and security of its citizens against terrorist threats and criminal activities.
