The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, has clarified that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has not endorsed any candidate for the Presidency of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

Fagbemi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), stated that the president has not directed anyone or any group to support a specific candidate.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, Fagbemi addressed the recent social media claims suggesting that President Tinubu had endorsed Afam Osigwe, SAN, as his preferred candidate in the ongoing NBA election.

The statement read in part: “My attention has been drawn to social media reports alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has endorsed Afam Osigwe, SAN, as his choice for the NBA Presidency. I want to categorically deny these claims. The president has not given any such instruction, and I completely disassociate myself from these misleading statements.

“I confirm that the president has not discussed this matter with anyone, nor has he issued any divisive instructions. These allegations are false and are being propagated by mischief-makers seeking to gain cheap popularity by leveraging the president’s name.

“As a democrat, the president upholds the principles of fair play and will not endorse any candidate in the NBA election. He is committed to accepting the results of a free and fair election and is prepared to work with whoever is elected.

“I urge those spreading these false claims to cease their actions. The president wishes the NBA a smooth election process and looks forward to collaborating with the elected candidate.”
