Nigerian Army Debunks Lagbaja Death Rumors, Confirms Medical Leave

Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, is alive and well, contrary to rumors circulating on social media about his death. The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has debunked these claims, stating that Lagbaja is currently on a well-deserved rest as part of his 2024 annual leave .

According to Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director Defence Information, Lagbaja will resume his duties once his leave ends . The DHQ has also clarified that no senior officer has been appointed as acting Chief of Army Staff, contrary to social media rumors.

The Nigerian Army has urged individuals spreading unfounded rumors to stop immediately, emphasizing that the army is professionally managed and all Service Chiefs are performing their duties as stipulated in the Constitution. Media organizations are advised to verify information with the appropriate authorities before releasing news to the public.

It’s worth noting that Lagbaja has been the Chief of Army Staff since June 2023, appointed by President Bola Tinubu . He has had a distinguished military career, serving in various capacities, including as General Officer Commanding Headquarters 82 Division and Headquarters 1 Division.
