Nigerian Government Objects as Nnamdi Kanu Outlines Conditions for Trial Resumption
The Federal Government Opposes Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial Conditions
During the hearing at the Federal High Court Abuja on Wednesday, detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, outlined conditions for the resumption of his trial, which were met with opposition from the Federal Government.
Kanu, represented by his lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, presented three conditions for the trial’s continuation. Firstly, he demanded the restoration of the bail previously granted to him to adequately prepare for his defense, arguing that its revocation was based on false claims by the government.
Secondly, he sought the nullification of the arrest warrant issued against him, contending that it was based on allegations of bail violation and escape from the country, which he refuted. Lastly, he insisted on unrestricted access for his lawyer to meet with him, as required by law, before facing an accelerated trial.
In response, the Federal Government, through its counsel Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, opposed Kanu’s conditions, labeling them as frivolous, vexatious, irritating, and baseless. Awomolo argued against the restoration of bail, citing the court’s earlier rejection of Kanu’s bail application and suggesting that the only recourse for Kanu is to appeal the decision at the Court of Appeal.
As the proceedings continue before Justice Binta Nyako, the fate of Kanu’s trial remains uncertain amidst the contentious conditions and the government’s opposition.
