Nigerian Meteorological Agency Predicts Three-Day Dust Haze Nationwide
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather forecast predicting sunshine and dust haze across the country from Monday to Wednesday.
In a weather update released on Sunday, NiMet forecasted mild dust haze for the northern region on Monday, with localized visibility ranging from 2km to 5km. The haze is expected to persist in the northern region throughout the forecast period.
Meanwhile, the North-Central region will experience sunny skies under a hazy atmosphere for the entire three-day period.
In contrast, the southern region will see sunny weather with some cloud cover, and thunderstorms along with light rain are expected in parts of Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States during the afternoon and evening hours.
For Tuesday, NiMet predicts moderate dust haze in the northern region, with visibility dropping below 1000 meters. The North-Central region will continue to experience slight dust haze, while the southern region will enjoy sunny spells, with occasional thunderstorms later in the day.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency also forecasted light rains in parts of Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.
On Wednesday, NiMet expects the northern region to experience moderate dust haze with localized visibility of less than 1000 meters throughout the day. The North-Central region will continue to have slight dust haze with localized visibility between 2km and 5km. The southern region is expected to see sunny weather with occasional cloud patches, along with possible afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Light rains are also expected in parts of Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.
NiMet has also issued a warning about dust particles suspended in the air, advising the public to take precautions. Individuals with respiratory conditions, such as asthma, are particularly urged to exercise caution due to the current weather conditions.
The agency advised residents to remain vigilant, as strong winds may precede rainfall in areas where thunderstorms are expected. It also recommended that airline operators consult NiMet’s airport-specific weather reports for accurate flight planning.
