Police Investigate death of Arise News anchor Maduagwu during Abuja Robbery

Authorities have launched an investigation following the tragic killing of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old Arise News anchor, during a robbery at her home in Katampe, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday.

Maduagwu, a lawyer-turned-journalist, was a respected anchor, reporter, and producer at Arise News Channel. Known for her professionalism and dedication, she quickly became a prominent and beloved figure in Nigerian journalism.

The management of Arise News confirmed her death in a statement released Monday, describing her as “a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers” and “a cherished member of the Arise News family.”

Signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of the station, the statement read: “Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja, which is currently under investigation by the Nigeria Police. While her voice is now silent, her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory.”

Her untimely death has sparked an outpouring of grief and tributes from colleagues, viewers, journalists, and members of the legal community.

Security sources have noted that the incident has once again highlighted ongoing concerns about the growing insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory.
