The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has raised alarm over the growing trend of recirculating outdated videos and false narratives online, warning that such acts pose serious threats to national security and public trust in the institution.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, condemned the deliberate re-sharing of old footage designed to portray the Police in a negative light.

“The Nigeria Police Force is deeply concerned about the current trend of recirculating old videos on the media space to malign the Police and undermine national security,” the statement read.

Adejobi stressed that these videos are being weaponised to erode public confidence and mislead citizens, despite ongoing efforts by the NPF to improve trust, welfare, and operational efficiency.

Two specific videos were cited. One featured a Police Mobile Force (PMF) officer decrying poor welfare conditions in Yobe State. The NPF clarified that the video is several years old and that the concerns raised have since been addressed through administrative reforms.

The second video showed a Counter Terrorism Unit officer alleging that the fight against banditry was politically motivated and that officers were deployed without sufficient arms. The Police stated that a thorough investigation found the claims false, and the officers involved were disciplined for spreading misinformation.

“The NPF categorically refutes and distances itself from the content of this video as it does not reflect the current realities within the Police Force,” Adejobi emphasized.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, called on Nigerians to be cautious and avoid spreading misleading content that could incite tension or discredit security institutions.

“Members of the public must be wary of the deliberate spread of falsehood to create tension and ridicule the Police,” Egbetokun said. “We urge mischief-makers to desist from such acts.”

He also reassured Nigerians that the Force is undergoing internal reforms aimed at improving officer welfare and operational effectiveness.

“Contrary to the narrative in these outdated clips, the Police Force is evolving to better meet the needs of both the public and its personnel,” the IGP concluded.
