Sowore to Honour Police Summons Today, Mobilizes Supporters for #PoliceProtest
Popular activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, is set to appear before the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit at Force Headquarters, Abuja, today, Wednesday, following a police summons.
Speaking to Nigeria News 247 on Tuesday night, Sowore confirmed his intention to honour the invitation, stating that he will be going with a group of fellow activists and supporters.
“I’m going with a full house,” he said. “Revolutionary comrades, citizens of conscience, voices of resistance — all are invited to join.”
The police had invited Sowore in a letter dated August 5, requesting his presence for questioning over allegations of forgery and criminal defamation, based on a petition received by the unit.
Sowore had earlier written to the police requesting details of the petition and the identity of the complainant. However, the unit replied that the petition would be disclosed during his appearance.
There are growing indications that the summons could trigger protests at the police headquarters. In a post on his official Facebook page Tuesday, Sowore announced the launch of a new campaign, #EgbetokunMustGo, along with the #PoliceProtest.
The activist has a history of confrontations with Nigerian security agencies and continues to be a prominent voice against government oppression and police misconduct.
