The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) strongly criticized the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for their ongoing indefinite strike that commenced on Monday.

The DWI accused the Unions of unfairly impacting the entire nation to serve a small group, as stated in a press release signed by Ismaila Umar Ali, the group’s Director of Strategic Communications.

In a forceful message, the DWI denounced the labor unions for their self-centered and irresponsible requests, cautioning that their actions would worsen Nigeria’s already severe economic circumstances.

The group highlighted the extensive suffering brought about by the strike, as millions of Nigerians face challenges in obtaining essential services and meeting their needs.

They expressed disbelief at how a small minority, comprising less than 1% of the population, could exert such control over the entire nation, resulting in immense difficulties and distress for the majority.

This situation serves as a clear warning against selfishness and emphasizes the importance of shared accountability, emphasized the statement.

The DWI expressed disapproval of the unions’ call for a salary hike, cautioning that it could exacerbate Nigeria’s inflation and further strain the already burdened populace.

In light of the nation’s economic difficulties, the group criticized the labor unions for placing their self-interest above the well-being of the country.

Advocating for government resilience, DWI emphasized prioritizing the welfare of the majority rather than yielding to a vocal minority’s demands.

The government should resist yielding to the demands of labor unions and instead focus on the well-being of all citizens in Nigeria.

Labor unions need to understand the repercussions of their actions and participate in productive negotiations that prioritize the welfare of all Nigerians, not just their own members.

Additionally, there is a call for labor unions to consider the lasting impacts of their decisions and engage in positive discussions with the government.

It was stressed that going on strike is a self-centered and irresponsible action that will only exacerbate Nigeria’s economic challenges. All parties are urged to prioritize the nation’s welfare and engage in constructive conversations to address the crisis.

NIGERIA NEWS 247 gathered that the Labour Unions decided to temporarily halt their indefinite strike on Tuesday after the Federal Government assured them that President Bola Tinubu would increase the monthly minimum wage beyond the initial offer of N60,000 for workers.
