The Simon Ekpa-led Biafra Government in Exile has written to the Canadian government defending Amaka Sunnberger amid calls for her prosecution over threats made against the Yoruba and Bini people of Edo State.

Sunnberger caused widespread outrage after posting a now-viral TikTok video in which she threatened harm against the Yoruba and Edo people. In response, the Nigerian government, through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) led by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, petitioned the Mayor of Brampton to prosecute Sunnberger for her remarks.

Reacting to the situation, Simon Ekpa, the self-declared Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), pledged to defend Sunnberger. To back this up, Dr. Joy Robi, Director General of the Biafra Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sent a letter to the Mayor of Brampton, addressing concerns about alleged inaccuracies in NiDCOM’s claims.

In a three-page letter posted on Ekpa’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Robi expressed concerns over the handling of the situation, alleging that violent remarks made against Biafrans in Nigeria did not lead to similar calls for prosecution.

The letter also mentioned that Sunnberger had suffered trauma due to an attempted kidnapping of her child in Canada, which may have contributed to her outburst. It claimed that Biafrans, both in Nigeria and abroad, endure intense mental suffering and threats to their lives, which are often overlooked.

Robi urged the Canadian government to disregard NiDCOM’s claims, arguing that Sunnberger’s remarks were a result of the mental anguish caused by the situation in Nigeria. The letter concluded by reiterating BRGIE’s commitment to defending Sunnberger against any actions taken by NiDCOM.
