VP Shettima Arrives in Katsina with Buhari’s Remains Amid National Mourning
Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Airport in Katsina at precisely 1:53 p.m. on Tuesday, accompanying the remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London after a prolonged illness. Buhari had been receiving medical treatment in the UK prior to his death.
A solemn atmosphere gripped the airport as military personnel, top government officials, and grieving citizens gathered to receive the casket, which was draped in the Nigerian flag. A ceremonial guard of honor was mounted in tribute to the late leader before the motorcade departed for Daura, Buhari’s ancestral hometown, where the funeral rites are taking place.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, left a lasting imprint on the nation’s political landscape. His passing has drawn an outpouring of grief and tributes from across Nigeria’s diverse political, ethnic, and religious communities.
Speaking briefly at the airport, Vice President Shettima—who represented the federal government during the body’s repatriation—expressed profound sorrow over Buhari’s death. He described the late leader as a steadfast patriot who devoted his life to Nigeria’s unity, security, and development.
“President Buhari’s legacy is one of discipline, integrity, and service to the nation,” Shettima stated. “As we mourn, we must also reflect on his contributions and strive to uphold the values he stood for.”
The arrival of Buhari’s remains marks the beginning of a series of funeral events in line with Islamic rites and national honors, ensuring a dignified farewell to one of Nigeria’s most influential post-independence leaders.
