Bishop Francis Emmanuel Okobo Passes Away at 89

Enugu, Nigeria – The Catholic community is in mourning following the passing of Bishop Emeritus, Most Rev. Francis Emmanuel Ogbonnia Okobo, who died this morning at the Niger Foundation Hospital, Enugu. He was 89.

The announcement was made with deep sorrow and heartfelt submission to the will of God, alongside a firm hope in the resurrection. Further details regarding funeral arrangements and tributes will be communicated in due course.

Bishop Okobo was a revered spiritual leader and the pioneer bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, serving faithfully from 1991 until his retirement in 2013. Born on November 4, 1936, in Lejja, now part of Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, he was ordained a priest on June 4, 1966, and consecrated a bishop on January 6, 1991.

Over his 23-year episcopacy, Bishop Okobo was known for his unwavering dedication, spiritual leadership, and tireless efforts in building and nurturing the faith of the Nsukka Catholic community.

He will be remembered for his humility, wisdom, and lifelong service to the Church.
