“Iwuanyanwu supported my career with $8,000”, Charly Boy mourns Ohanaeze President-General
Renowned singer and activist Charles Oputa, known as Charly Boy, expressed his sorrow over the passing of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Charly Boy reflected on Iwuanyanwu’s significance in his life, stating that he was the first Nigerian to believe in him and support his aspirations.
He recounted how upon returning from the United States in 1981 with nothing but a dream and limited resources, he encountered Chief Iwuanyanwu by chance in his hometown of Oguta after having distanced himself from his unsupportive parents. At that moment, Iwuanyanwu generously gifted him $8,000.
I nearly lost consciousness, and that experience motivated me to establish my brand when I launched my Jankara studio in my hometown.
He was the first Nigerian to back and believe in my vision. While expressing his appreciation for Iwuanyanwu’s influence on his life and career, Charly Boy highlighted the significance of legacy, stating that it is determined by the difference one makes in the lives of others.
He remarked, My people, legacy truly revolves around the individuals we’ve impacted, the inspiration we’ve provided, changing someone’s course even if just for a brief moment, prompting them to reflect, weep, rejoice, or debate.
Above all, it is our smiles that leave a lasting impression—the ones exchanged with our loved ones and those offered to strangers in need at just the right moment, as if fate placed us there to provide comfort.
Chief, I will always remember how you unexpectedly reignited my career. I’m certain many others have similar tales of your impact on their lives. My gratitude for you is boundless. May you rest peacefully, dear brother and father.
