2027: Nnamdi Kanu’s Release Not a Condition for South-East to Support Tinubu – Umahi
Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has stated that the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is not a prerequisite for the South-East to back President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Speaking with journalists in Lagos on Friday, Umahi refuted claims that the South-East region has tied its political support to Kanu’s release.
“Someone asked me about Nnamdi Kanu, and I said his release is not a condition for our support. We’re open to dialogue, but no one should make it a bargaining chip—the President didn’t put him in detention,” Umahi explained.
Describing President Tinubu as a responsive and reform-focused leader, Umahi expressed optimism that Kanu’s situation would be resolved through dialogue and divine intervention, rather than political pressure.
“President Tinubu may not be perfect, but he is making the right moves. He inherited a struggling economy and has earned international confidence through his reforms, which is why we’re getting support for key projects,” he said.
Umahi highlighted ongoing infrastructure developments in the South-East under Tinubu’s administration, including road rehabilitation previously neglected by past governments. He challenged critics to show tangible contributions they’ve made to the nation.
On the issue of political inclusion, Umahi dismissed suggestions that the South-East is marginalized in federal appointments, arguing that the current administration has done more for the region than previous ones.
He also called for unity among political leaders across party lines, noting that South-East governors, regardless of affiliation, are cooperating effectively with the President.
Addressing speculation about his political future, Umahi ruled out a presidential bid in 2027.
“I’m not running. I’ll work for my boss, President Tinubu. The APC offers the South-East a clear path forward. We now have a voice at the centre, and there’s no going back,” he stated.
