The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has nullified the recently held congress in Cross River State and announced the constitution of a Caretaker Committee to oversee the party’s affairs in the state.

This decision was announced in a statement issued Tuesday by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, in Abuja.

According to Ologunagba, the action was taken in line with the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017), following confusion over conflicting communications regarding the congress. While PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, had earlier notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the postponement of congresses in Cross River, Plateau, and Kebbi States, the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, issued a separate letter insisting the Cross River congress would proceed on September 27.

Ologunagba clarified that despite a gathering of individuals in Calabar, no valid congress was held, and the tenure of the existing State Executive Committee had already expired, necessitating the formation of a Caretaker Committee.

The committee, which will serve for a maximum of three months beginning Wednesday, October 1, 2025, is expected to manage the party’s affairs until a new executive is elected.
