2027: Why Goodluck Jonathan will not run under PDP – Dele Momodu
A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has dismissed rumours suggesting that former President Goodluck Jonathan may contest the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme aired on Friday, Dele Momodu downplayed the speculation, pointing out that powerful interests within the PDP remain opposed to Jonathan’s return.
“I doubt that Jonathan will run on the PDP platform,” Momodu said. “Those who are determined to kill the PDP are still very much entrenched in the party.”
He also cautioned against overanalyzing recent political meetings, such as Jonathan’s visit with Labour Party leader and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi. According to him, political figures meet regularly, and such interactions should not automatically be interpreted as signs of electoral alliances.
“Politicians meet all the time. That Jonathan and Obi met doesn’t mean there’s an alliance,” he said.
Citing a recent public reaction to the meeting between President Bola Tinubu and Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, Momodu highlighted how speculation often fuels political discourse.
“The other day, we saw a picture of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso with President Bola Tinubu, and people immediately assumed he was planning to leave NNPP for APC. People speculate a lot,” he added.
He urged political observers to avoid conjecture and focus instead on strategic planning, emphasizing the importance of democratic processes.
“This is not a time to speculate. It’s a time to focus and strategize,” Momodu stressed. “In a democracy, if consensus isn’t possible, let there be primaries. Whoever wins at the poll should be accepted by all.”
