The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed President Bola Tinubu’s order to withdraw police officers from Very Important Persons (VIPs) as mere political theatre.

In a statement on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the move as symbolic and said it fails to tackle Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.

NIGERIA NEWS 247 recalls that on Sunday, President Tinubu ordered the immediate withdrawal of police officers attached to VIPs nationwide. According to his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the officers will be redeployed to core policing duties in communities.

Reacting, the ADC said the decision amounts to grandstanding and demonstrates a limited understanding of the country’s security challenges. “The decision is not new. Similar announcements were made twice in 2025 by the Inspector-General of Police. The latest order makes for good headlines but does not address the complexity of terrorism, banditry, mass abductions, and violent crime across the country,” Abdullahi stated.
