Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s current direction as inconsistent with its founding values.

Atiku’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP Chairman in his home ward of Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State. In the letter, he expressed deep regret over the decision, noting that the PDP had strayed from the ideals upon which it was established.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter stated.

Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President for two terms and has been the party’s presidential candidate on two occasions, acknowledged the significant role the PDP has played in his political journey.

“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life. I remain grateful for those opportunities,” he wrote.

However, he emphasized that the party’s current “trajectory” made continued affiliation untenable.

“It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged. The direction the Party has taken no longer reflects the foundational principles we stood for,” he added.

Atiku, a founding member of the PDP, is now reportedly playing a key role in a broader opposition coalition ahead of upcoming political realignments.

He concluded his letter by wishing the party and its leadership well, even as he moves on: “I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support.”
