Buba Galadima Explains Why INEC Cannot Ensure Free and Fair Elections Under Tinubu
A chieftain of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Buba Galadima, has expressed doubts over the ability of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct credible elections under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Galadima accused the Tinubu-led government of prioritizing political maneuvering over governance, just two years into its tenure.
According to him, INEC lacks the “muscle and guts” to enforce electoral discipline, particularly as political activities are already intensifying ahead of schedule, driven largely by those within the corridors of power.
“Look at what’s happening — politicking has taken over governance, and INEC doesn’t even have the courage to call anyone to order because those in government are the ones leading the charge,” Galadima said.
He lamented that, unlike in the past when INEC would issue timely warnings to politicians overheating the polity, the current commission has remained silent.
“If they can’t stop politicians from jumping the gun, how do you expect them to conduct free and fair elections?” he asked.
Galadima concluded by hinting that he and others are deliberately staying quiet for now, but would speak out and take action when the time is right. “We are waiting for the right moment. When we begin, the world will know we’ve arrived,” he said.
