The leadership of the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is calling for the immediate impeachment of Governor Godwin Obaseki following his alleged threat to “burn down the country.”

In a statement released on Monday in Benin City, Emperor Jarret Tenebe, the Acting Chairman of the party, condemned the governor’s recent remarks made in a viral video. Obaseki purportedly threatened to set the nation ablaze if those responsible for the murder of Inspector Akor Onuh at the Benin Airport are not apprehended by the police.

Tenebe urged the Edo State House of Assembly to swiftly begin impeachment proceedings against Obaseki and denounce his purported threat as reckless and dangerous. He argued that such threats represent a significant escalation of violence and insecurity in the state.

According to Tenebe, the governor’s actions have exacerbated the state’s security situation, alleging that Obaseki has empowered the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) and Public Work Volunteers (PUWOV) to target and attack those who oppose his administration.

He described Obaseki’s threats as a descent into madness that could lead to chaos and lawlessness in both Edo State and the wider nation. Tenebe also criticized the governor’s handling of recent violence, suggesting that state-sponsored extrajudicial killings have been masked by misleading reports of inter-cult conflicts.

Tenebe concluded that it is crucial to address the governor’s alleged threats promptly to prevent further escalation and safeguard the state’s stability.
