Godwin Obaseki, the Governor of Edo State, has inaugurated Omobayo Marvellous Godwins as the new deputy governor of the state.

Omobayo assumes the position following the impeachment of Philip Shaibu by the State House of Assembly on Monday morning.

The impeachment followed the adoption of the report of the Justice S. A. Omonua (rtd)-led impeachment panel, which was appointed by the Chief Judge of Edo State to investigate allegations of misconduct and perjury against Shaibu.

Eighteen out of the 20 lawmakers present at the plenary on April 8, 2024, voted in favor of the impeachment, while one voted against. The panel found Shaibu guilty of leaking government official secrets but not guilty of perjury.

In response to the impeachment, Governor Obaseki promptly administered the oath of office to Omobayo, who hails from Akoko-Edo Local Government Area in the same Edo North Senatorial District as the impeached deputy governor.

Born on July 19, 1986, Omobayo is described as a seasoned engineer with extensive experience in the oil and gas sector. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and an MSc in Public Administration from the University of Benin, UNIBEN.
