The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised security concerns regarding the upcoming governorship election in Edo State.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, shared these concerns during his appearance before the joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on Thursday. This appearance was part of the preparations for the forthcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states.

Prof. Yakubu noted that security was a primary concern for INEC in the Edo governorship election. He explained that a political party had expressed concerns about the potential deployment of the Edo State Security Network (ESSN). In response, INEC promptly convened a meeting with the Commissioner of Police and other security agencies in the state.

He added that INEC agreed to engage with all political parties regarding this issue. The Commissioner of Police assured the party leaders that he would address the matter with the state government. Since then, Prof. Yakubu stated that he has not received any further official complaints from any party or candidate regarding the role of the ESSN.
