The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has dismissed concerns over possible internal tensions following the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, saying the move does not indicate any crisis within the ruling party.

Speaking during a media parley organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone B, which represents journalists from the South-West region, Basiru described Ganduje’s resignation as a routine political development.

“If you look at the party’s official statement, Dr. Ganduje was commended for his efforts in repositioning the APC. Under his leadership, more states came under the party’s control, and the party was strengthened administratively since our joint election as National Chairman and National Secretary on August 3, 2023,” Basiru said.

Ganduje recently stepped down amid widespread speculation that former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, could be planning to defect to the APC. However, Basiru brushed aside such rumours, insisting that Ganduje’s resignation is not linked to any internal conflict.

“This isn’t the first time a party official has resigned. Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Senator Iyiola Omisore also resigned before we assumed office in August 2023. Ganduje’s resignation is not a crisis—it’s mere speculation,” he added.

Basiru emphasized that the APC remains robust and continues to grow under the stewardship of committed party members. He also praised Ganduje’s legacy, highlighting his role in expanding the party’s national presence.

Addressing speculation in Osun State political circles that Governor Ademola Adeleke, a key figure in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), might defect to the APC, Basiru firmly denied the claim.

“Adeleke is not joining our party. As of today, there’s no discussion of defection. While the APC remains an attractive party to many, I can confidently say, as a committed party man and someone loyal to Mr. President, that the idea of Adeleke joining the APC is not on the table,” Basiru said.
