Imo PDP Dismisses Alleged Legal Challenge Against State Congress as Baseless
The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed reports of a legal challenge against its leadership, describing the purported lawsuit as baseless and destined to fail.
In a press statement issued by the party’s spokesperson, Lancelot Obiaku, the PDP clarified that its attention had been drawn to claims that certain individuals were seeking to nullify the State Congress that produced the current executive led by Austin Nwachukwu.
Obiaku maintained that the congress was lawfully conducted and fully endorsed by the party’s national leadership.
He explained that the State Congress, held on August 31, 2024, was part of a structured electoral process approved by the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC). This process included ward congresses in July 2024 and local government congresses on August 10, 2024.
“All stages of the congress were supervised by the national leadership of the party,” Obiaku noted. “Accredited delegates, including those from Ideato North and Ideato South—where the petitioners reportedly hail from—participated fully. The congress was also monitored by security agencies, INEC officials, and the media.”
According to Obiaku, the congress complied with Section 25(1) of the PDP Constitution, and no parallel congresses or formal objections were raised before, during, or after the process. The party’s Appeal Panel also received no complaints, further validating the legitimacy of the election.
He dismissed the reported legal challenge as “frivolous, laughable, and an exercise in futility,” emphasizing that those behind the suit—led by one Lambert Eze—are no longer PDP members, having been expelled for indiscipline and anti-party activities.
“There is no evidence that these individuals contested any position during the congress. Their claims are, therefore, without merit and dead on arrival,” Obiaku stated.
He also debunked claims that 83 PDP members are backing the legal challenge, labeling such reports as false and fabricated.
“The delegates from Ideato North and South have openly dissociated themselves from the suit,” he said, adding that the party’s State Working Committee (SWC) and State Executive Committee (SEC) have worked tirelessly to stabilize and strengthen the PDP in Imo.
Obiaku concluded that the lawsuit appears to be a distraction engineered by political opponents threatened by the party’s unity and growing influence in the state.
